Election results in Rwanda mark the darkest day for Rwandans

Press Release

While Rwandans and the world expected the North Korean style election results in Rwanda, their announcement is foreboding.  It means a continued repression of Rwandans inside and across borders as well as regional destabilisation. What in store for Rwandans are “arbitrary or unlawful killings; torture; harassment, arrest, and abuse of political opponents, human rights advocates, and individuals perceived to pose a threat to government control and social order; security forces’ disregard for the rule of law; and restrictions on civil liberties hence denying citizens the ability to change their government through free and fair elections”. It will also mean anti people and haphazard policies i.e. agricultural policy, more political and social exclusion which have the root cause of the cycle of political violence in Rwanda.

The illusion of any change of government in the near future has been dispelled by the statement of the Speaker of the Senate Mr Makuza Bernard calling on the people of Rusizi at a rally in the western province on the 28th of July 2017, to start thinking of voting President Kagame for another 10 years i.e. 2024- 2034. The same strategy of preparing the public opinion to the amendment of the Constitution in 2105, was used in 2010 by the Home Affairs Minister Sheikh, Fazil Harelimana

The Unified Democratic Forces (FDU-Inkingi) would like to thank very sincerely the journalists and through them their papers, for helping to remove the blinders that the international lobbies have used to present Rwanda as a country of a burgeoning democracy, a reconciled nation with a promising bright future.

The entrenchment of President Kagame in power is a threat to peace and security in the Great Lakes Region.

On the 3rd and 4th of August 2017, Rwandans performed the ritual of confirming Paul Kagame as President of Rwanda for the next 7 years and potentially beyond. President Kagame rightly announced on his 1st day of campaigning in his home town of Ruhango on the 14th of July 2017, that the elections were over following the referendum of December 2015 in which he got the score of 98% of the votes, almost equal to the score in Iraq under of Sadam Hussein, 100% of votes in 2002, and of Assad of Syria, nearly 90% of votes in 2014 and North Korea 99.99% in 2016.

Rwanda: General Paul Kagame designated “against his will!” as a candidate of the RPF Inkotanyi during the August presidential election

». Following the plebiscite of General Paul Kagame as a candidate of the RPF-Inkotanyi in the August presidential election in Rwanda, the FDU-Inkingi, a political party of the opposition to the regime in place in Kigali, has the honor to address to the Rwandan people and the international community the following observations:

General Paul Kagame feigned a regret that he had to run for a third time as a candidate in the presidential election. In his speech addressed to his followers after his plebiscite as a candidate for his own succession, General Paul Kagame declared: “You asked me to stay and here I remain…”.

RWANDA: FEAR AND AGONY OF FAMILIES OVER ENFORCED DISAPPEARANCES OF LOVED ONES BY SECURITY AGENTS

PRESS RELEASE

There are reports of a rise in enforced disappearances in the Rwandan capital Kigali during the month of May 2017 just two months before presidential elections scheduled for August 4, 2017, by people believed to be security agents. What is happening calls to mind the clampdown on opposition leaders, journalists, and anyone critical of the ruling party before 2010 presidential elections.

Indeed, we have learned from well informed sources that the FPR party has just ordered Rwandan employees to pay 50% of their salary as a “special contribution” to support the candidacy of President Paul Kagame in the flawed presidential elections scheduled for August 2017.

PRESS RELEASE

MR SIBOMANA SYLVAIN, SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE FDU-INKINGI, LIKE OTHER VULNERABLE PRISONERS, IS AT SIGNIFICANT RISK OF RENEWED ABUSE AFTER FIRE BROKE OUT AT KIMIRONKO PRISON.

We have just learnt from well-informed sources that political prisoner Mr. Sibomana Sylvain, Secretary General of the FDU-Inkingi, has just been taken from his place of detention and taken to a solitary confinement room, nicknamed called ” Ibagiro” in Kinyarwanda, meaning butchery in English, where torture and other forms of cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment are meted on prisoners. There is a high risk of further mistreatment and torture.

THE RWANDAN STATE WITHDRAWS INTEMPESTIVELY FROM THE TRIAL WHICH OPPOSES IT TO Mrs. VICTOIRE INGABIRE UMUHOZA IN THE AFRICAN COURT OF HUMAN AND PEOPLES ‘RIGHTS AT ARUSHA IN TANZANIA.

PRESS RELEASE

The Unified Democratic Forces (FDU Inkingi), a political party opposed to the regime of the ruling Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), would like to inform the public that the Rwandan state did not show up on Wednesday 22 March 2017 at the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights in Arusha, Tanzania, to defend itself in the appeal case No. 003/2014 brought against it by political prisoner Mrs. Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza.

The Rwandan State has boycotted the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights in Case No. 003/2014, which opposes it to Ms. Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza, President of the FDU-Inkingi.

Press Release

According to reliable sources, the Rwandan Government and the National Commission for the Fight against Genocide (CNLG) have decided unexpectedly to withdraw from the case No. 003/2014 which opposes the Rwandan State to Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza and whose hearing is scheduled on March 22, 2017 before the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) in Arusha, Tanzania.

According to our sources, the RPF regime in Rwanda alleges lack of impartiality on the part of the Court even before the beginning of the substantive debate has started. It has therefore decided to withdraw from the hearing before the Court in a desperate attempt to kill in the bud the request of Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza, a political prisoner, currently incarcerated in Rwanda. The Rwandan State, fearing its imminent condemnation, has decided to bring out its heaviest weapon of giving such an excuse for not appearing before the court.

Such a last-ditch manoeuvre to derail the trial comes after intense and fruitless pressure from all sides, for the trial to be abandoned. The FDU-Inkingi denounces this hypocrisy of the RPF regime, which in July 2016, pushed for the election of a Rwandan judge, Marie-Thérèse Mukamulisa, by the General Assembly of the African Union, to sit on the bench of the judges of the African Court. The Rwandan State which had then become judge and jury in the Court is now complaining about lack of impartiality of the Court!
