RWANDA : CHANGING ARTICLE 101 OF THE RWANDAN CONSTITUTION IS A RECIPE TO ENTRENCH ONE PARTY RULE AND A PATHWAY TO INSTABILITY

RWANDA : THE FDU-INKINGI CONDEMN RURA‘S DECISION TO SUSPEND INDEFINITELY BBC KINYARWANDA PROGRAMMES

PRESS RELEASE

According to information relayed to the press on May 29, 2015, the authority of RURA (Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority) has decided to permanently suspend BBC Kinyarwanda programmes in Rwanda  over a documentary (Untold Story) aired by the BBC  in October last year. The RURA authority concluded that “the broadcasting of BBC documentary (Untold Story) is an abuse of freedom of press and expression, violates BBC’s own editorial lines… violates journalistic standards and violates the laws of Rwanda particularly that relating to genocide denial and revisionism as well as that bearing on incitement to hatred and division among Rwandans “. RURA stated that “the identified offences will be forwarded to the Attorney General for review and action.”

The FDU-Inkingi condemn this blatant violation of the right to free press. This suspension stems from pressures by the RPF which has never digested that the hidden face of the Rwandan tragedy and criminal responsibilities of certain members of the RPF in the Rwandan genocide, war crimes and other crimes against humanity be stripped naked. This deplorable decision shows once again the true nature of the dictatorial regime of President Kagame that regularly violates the freedom of the press in Rwanda.  Indeed free press has been muzzled, independent journalists are often jailed or assassinated.
