RWANDA: INGABIRE VERDICT POSTPONED TO 07 SEPTEMBER 2012

unfair justice

Kigali High Court has adjourned the verdict of political prisoner Victoire Ingabire, Chair of FDU-INKINGI, to 07 September 2012. The judges ruled they needed more time to deliberate. No reference was made to a pending constitutional review of some contentious genocide laws opening in the Supreme Court from 19 July 2012.

Political prisoner Victoire Ingabire was arrested in October 2010 after she announced her decision to compete for the Presidential office. Since her return to Rwanda, President Paul Kagame has instructed his judiciary to prosecute the challenger. The government of Rwanda alleged there was overwhelming evidence against the opposition leader for charges related to links to FDLR rebellion.

RWANDA: SUPREME COURT FRESH SUMMON MAY STAY PROCEEDINGS AGAINST THE POLITICAL PRISONER VICTOIRE INGABIRE.

unfair justice

The Rwanda Supreme Court has summoned Madame Victoire Ingabire for 19 July 2012 to re-open, on demand of the defendant, proceedings on the constitutionality of contentious genocide ideology and divisionism laws. According to Rwandan laws, such a move stays proceedings in lower judicial institutions. Meanwhile the High Court has not yet notified the defendant of any measure to postpone its verdict due tomorrow on 29 June 2012. Stayed or not, neither the political prisoner, nor any of her lawyers will seat in the courtroom for the kangaroo verdict because she has withdrawn from the proceedings in the High Court since 16 April 2012 after a scandalous intimidation of a key defense witness.

RWANDA: PRESIDENT PAUL KAGAME CONTINUES TO INTERFERE IN THE TRIAL OF Ms. VICTOIRE INGABIRE UMUHOZA, CHAIR OF THE PARTY FDU-INKINGI.

Kigali, June 19, 2012.

Today, June 19, 2012, President Paul Kagame held a meeting with journalists at Village Urugwiro.

The press conference was dominated by the ongoing crisis between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in connection with the CNDP rebels now renamed March 23 Movement (M23). Even though the President of the Republic of Rwanda endlessly went after the UN peacekeeping mission in DRC (MONUSCO) which has allegedly not lived up to end the DRC problems, it was clear that his explanations could not convince the journalists.

GACACA COURTS, MADE UP LEGACY AND A MORE DIVIDED RWANDA.

This week,Rwandais celebrating the end and accomplishments of Gacaca courts, a bridge-gaping judiciary system set to try hundreds of thousands of genocide suspects. The official narrative echoed by governmental mouthpieces and national or international partisan media is the tremendous achievements of this community based justice in terms of national reconciliation returns and end to the impunity. But this system conducted under a close watch and supervision of the current regime leaves behind a more dividedRwandaas it has only tried hundreds of thousands of suspects from one ethnic group with no due nor fair process.

The whole extent of how this tagged justice routinely continued to fall short has been exposed by different researchers.

Many voices from inside and outside Rwanda have decried such a judicial parody (goal settling, revenge, corruption) hearing the most atrocious crimes by normal citizens with no legal education and mostly genocide survivors pronouncing hefty sentences, lengthy community work, deprivation of property against suspects, their enemies or family members of the criminals, torturers, rapists, neighbours, etc. War crimes, crimes against humanity committed by members of the ruling party and its army, ethnic crimes committed by the then rebellion remain a very protected taboo.

RWANDA: CALL UPON FDU-INKINGI’S DISSIDENTS

PRESS RELEASE

The party FDU-Inkingi calls upon the dissident group led by the putschists Eugene Ndahayo and Jean Baptiste Mberabahizi to demonstrate professional conduct, ethics, selflessness and courage by renouncing their demagogic practices and slander against the party and its legitimate leaders. Their attitude has sufficiently proved the real nature of these political leaders who claim to be leaders by heredity and constantly change their political affiliations by opportunism.

This small group of dissidents revealed its true intentions through the pamphlet it recently released under the usurping title of “FDU-Inkingi Newsletter June 2012.” Their statements full of hate and slander have finally revealed the identity of various anonymous authors who, while hiding behind pseudonyms, spread slander aimed at dragging in the mud Ms. Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza, the Chair of the party, members of the Interim Executive Committee and members of the Coordinating Committee as well.

Rwanda: Attack against the aircraft of former Rwandan President: The revelations of the newspaper Liberation are neither new nor conclusive.

Because the public opinion’s memory is fleeting, some journalists recycle the old stories by presenting them as the new ones. Through unspecified purposes aimed at not only smoking out that opinion but also pressuring the new French government and French judges in charge of investigating the case related to the aerial attack of 6 April 1994 that claimed the life of President Juvenal Habyarimana, the French newspaper Liberation, in its issue of June 1, 2012, “revealed” that a quantity of “undetermined surface to air SA-7 type missiles” made in Russia and “15 surface to air Mistral type missiles” made in France and whose sale was prohibited at that time, were among the arsenal of the Rwandan Armed Forces (FAR) which were defeated in 1994.

The suggestion of journalist Maria Malagardis is clear and compelling: according to the journalist, the Mistral missiles were allegedly used by the former Rwandan army to physically liquidate President Juvenal Habyarimana and thus sparked the genocide. At the same time, it takes away, in this very serious crime, any accountability of the former rebel army of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), now in power in Rwanda.
