STATEMENT BY THE FDU-INKINGI AND RWANDA NATIONAL CONGRESS AT THE CONCLUSION OF A WEEK-LONG CONSULTATION IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

From 16th -23rd September, 2011, met in Washington D.C., in the United States, to review progress thus made since the founding of the  common platform, a coalition for change established at the beginning of this year. Participating in the consultations were  Nkiko Nsengimana, Sixbert Musangamfura, Theophille Murayi and  Nepo Manirarora of FDU-inkingi; and Gerald Gahima, Gervais Condo and Theogene Rudasingwa of Rwanda National Congress.

While the Rwandan opposition is still traumatised by the gun attack against one member, Eric Nshimyumuremyi,  who survived police chest bullet on 15 September 2011, the first three weeks of the politically motivated case against the opposition leader Madame Victoire Ingabire left the trial in a tailspin. Today, Justice Alice Rulisa, lost her cool and furiously decided to postpone the hearings until 04 October 2011, in order to allow the prosecutor to prepare his response to defence submissions on the principle of non-retroactivity of criminal law, and on the territorial jurisdiction of the high court.

INGABIRE TRIAL: THE GOVERNMENT HAS ADOPTED A SNAIL STRATEGY HOPING TO DIVERT NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION.

Since the opening of this politically motivated trial, Paul Kagame’s government has adopted a snail strategy in order to divert national and international attention and hoping that the defense will end up in exhaustion. After the prosecutor failed the adjournment, he did not allow the key defendant Madame Victoire Ingabire, FDU-Inkingi chair, to pronounce any single word and instead he has been endlessly repeating the indictments.

RWANDA: FIRST WEEK OF INGABIRE TRIAL MARRED BY INTIMIDATIONS

The first week of Ingabire trial has ended today at 13:00 and hearings will resume on 12 September 2011 at 08:00. The trial start has been marred by intimidation of the defense counsel of the opposition leader Victoire Ingabire, Chair of FDU-Inkingi ; humiliation of the key defendant and a display of force. The indictments and modus operandi have taken the whole week.  At this stage what is clear is that the Prosecutors and their key-witnesses who are at the same time co-accused in this trial have been rehearsing the case in order to substantiate the terror allegations against the opposition leader.

OPEN LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED NATIONS ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL

The organizations that form the political platform FDU-Inkingi/Rwandan National Congress (RNC) were shocked to learn that the United Nations Economic and Social Council has unanimously approved the request by the Rwandan government to become member of the Executive Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. To accept such a nomination would be like putting the wolf into the sheepfold.

The trial of the opposition leader Madame Victoire Ingabire, FDU-INKINGI Chair, resumed today  after a one day pause to allow the High Court to hire a better English translator. Upon arrival,  Ingabire’s defense counsels Barrister Iain Edwards and Batonnier Gatera Gashabana were intimidated, thoroughly searched, their briefcases violated and their mineral water bottles confiscated.

The trial of the opposition leader Madame Victoire Ingabire, FDU-INKINGI Chair, started today with a new prosecutor’s request to postpone the trial to an unknown date due to the fact that the  Dutch government has not sent withheld “pieces of evidence”. The defence counsel reminded “that from the start, justifying the preventive detention  of the opposition leader, President Paul Kagame, his government  and the Prosecutor  stated they had overwhelming evidence.

The Rwandan victor’s justice starts on 05 September 2011 the political trial of the opposition leader Madame Victoire Ingabire, FDU-INKINGI chair, detained since October 2010. The governement is pushing for a life  sentence.
